ABOUT NITTE (DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY)

The Nitte (Deemed to be University) was formed by the Nitte Education Trust. In the last 3 decades, this trust has established 43 institutions, spread over 3 campuses at Nitte, Mangalore and Bangalore. Centres of excellence in education and community service in Karnataka State, Nitte Health Care institutions are duly recognized by the Government of India. The status of Deemed-to-be-University was conferred upon Nitte in June 2008 [vide MHRD Notification No. F.9-13/2007-U.3(A) dated 4th June 2008]by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (Department of Higher Education, Government of India). The University has been accredited by NAAC with 'A+' Grade with 3.40 CGPA and placed under category 'A' by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. It has the NIRF ranking of 65 among 950 Universities in the country (2023).

The Nitte (Deemed to be University) has a total of thirteen constituent colleges, namely - KS Hegde Medical Academy (established in 1999); A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences (1985); N.G.S.M. Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1983), Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences (1992); Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy (1997); Nitte Institute of Communication (2012); Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research (2013); Nitte Institute of Architecture (2015); Nitte Institute of Speech & Hearing (2007); Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology (1986); Justice KS Hegde Institute of Management (1998); Dr. Nitte Shankara Adyanthaya Memorial First Grade College (1988); and Sarosh Institute of Hotel Administration (1992). All these constituent colleges are approved and recognized by the respective Central Statutory Councils. The total number of courses (UG, PG & Ph.D) offered by the University is 118.

The Nitte (Deemed to be University) is progressing towards distinction with a firm belief in its Vision “To build a humane society through education and health-care”, and Mission “To further develop Nitte (Deemed to be University) as a centre of excellence; imparting quality education and generating competent, skilled manpower to face the future scientific and social challenges with a high degree of credibility, integrity, ethical standards and social concern”

The institution has firm belief that merely loading students with information is not enough. They should be able to inculcate ethical values, a concern for the less privileged, and the society at large; by the time they come out of the portals of the University.

ABOUT KS HEGDE MEDICAL ACADEMY

KS Hegde Medical Academy was established in 1999 by the Nitte Education Trust. The college is named after its visionary founder; late Justice KS Hegde, former Justice of the Supreme Court of India, and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha. KS Hegde Medical Academy was affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, till 2008. In 2009, it became a constituent institution of the Nitte (Deemed to be University). The college is recognized by the Medical Council of India, Govt. of India / National Medical Commission. The Institute started admitting students to the undergraduate course MBBS from the year 1999- 2000 and to postgraduate courses in 2006. Recognized as one of the finest educational institutions in Karnataka, it attracts students from all over India & abroad.

During the period from April 2022 to March 2023, the Institution continued to consolidate its position as an emerging, quality-conscious destination for training in healthcare professions. The institution is led by Prof. (Dr.) P.S. Prakash, Dean, Dr. Amrit M. Mirajkar, Vice-Dean (Academics) and Dr. Jayaprakash Shetty, Vice-Dean (Administration). The institution is engaged in the noble mission of empowering the young generation in higher learning; with a dedicated team of teachers and a conducive learning environment. It has been functioning with the vision & mission to build a humane society through excellence in education and health care with a high degree of professional credibility, integrity and ethical standards blended with social concerns.

Structured Clinical Skills training is available for the Undergraduate Students at NU-MEDISIM, the Institution's advanced Clinical Skills Training Center; BLS training and a two-day orientation program focus on hands-on training in common clinical skills for the Interns and Postgraduate orientation with ACLS. BLS, ECLS and a Short Course in Research Design and Protocols are conducted every year. The KSHEMA Integrated Training and Education program was continued this year as well. Further, the NU E-learning facility is provided for the students with upgraded state-of-the-art e-class facilities. The online classes through NUeLearn were effectively conducted during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

A full-fledged 1000-bed hospital is attached to the institute with state-of-the-art facilities, including 18 modern Operation theatres, Ultra-modern Cath lab, MRI Scan, Spiral CT scan, fully computerized C-arm with IITV, Dialysis unit, fully equipped ICU/ ICCU, 24-hour emergency and casualty services and super specialty departments for training the undergraduate & Postgraduate students. It has become a tertiary care hospital with Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine, Neurology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Urology, Pediatric Surgery, Endocrinology, Oncology, Onco-surgery, Plastic Surgery, Gastroenterology and Craniofacial Surgery Departments. Critical Surgeries such as Valve Replacement Surgery, CABG, Neonatal Surgery, Cancer Surgery, and Paediatric Surgery are regularly performed at the hospital.

Professional Development Programs were organized for the teaching as well as non-teaching staff of the Institution during the year with the help of the Staff Development Centre, Nitte DU. Research continued to receive support at the Institution. Justice KS Hegde Charitable Hospital, attached to the Institution, contributed its finest service for the management of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 2,71,758 patients availed the outpatient (OPD) services during the period, and more than 25,999 in-patients were treated at the Justice KS Hegde Charitable Hospital attached to the Institution. Community extension services through the 11 Rural Health Care Centers attached to the Institution are a key aspect of its social commitment and its mission to mould socially sensitive and empathetic health professionals. A total of 113 health camps and public awareness events were organized by the various departments with 7,606 beneficiaries. KS Hegde Medical Academy is ranked among the top medical colleges by Outlook, The Week, and India Today magazines in their latest issues.

The state-of-the-art Artis Zee Cathlab was installed in May 2021, where higher-end interventional cardiology procedures and interventional radiological procedures can be carried out. It also has additional features of dynamic CT and 3D rotational angiogram for neurological interventions, with a low radiation profile. It has special applications for peripheral angioplasty and TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation). Intravascular Ultrasound, Optical Coherence Tomography and Fractional Flow Reserve estimation can also be performed.

It can be inferred from this overview that the KS Hegde Medical Academy continues to make steady progress towards achieving excellence in its missions of patient care as well as research & development.
